WILLIAMSBURG — Jerry Herron’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will be facing Harlan today in first-round action of the Class 1A playoffs.
The last time these two teams faced off, the Yellow Jackets found a hefty 40-0 lead at halftime to help seal the 47-6 victory for Williamsburg.
“This is a veteran team that’s been to the playoffs, been in the region finals, won district titles, so they know exactly what’s going on,” Herron said. “We’ve played Harlan already. We know what they’ve got, we know that they’re experienced. Our guys are very experienced too, very used to this, so we’ve had a great week of practice, very focused. We’re getting ready to play a team that we played before this year and we’re ready to just get out there and get better.”
Williamsburg (8-2) is coming off a four-game winning streak, while Harlan (1-9) has struggled this season with their only win being over Jenkins in a forfeit.
Though the Yellow Jackets are heavy favorites in today’s matchup, Herron said he knows that Harlan will come ready to compete.
“We have to keep our shoulders square and attack the ball on defense and on offense, we have to take what’s there,” Herron said. “They blitzed us a little the last time we played them and we have to just be able to take what they give us and execute and score some points.”
Herron said that his team is ready to get started in the first round of the playoffs, as he and his Yellow Jackets have big goals for the postseason this year.
“The biggest thing we’ve told our kids all year is that no matter who we play, we have to get better and we’re always trying to get better and improve because we know what our goal is,” he said. “Our goal is to be playing for a state championship and that’s what we try to do every year. That’s what we practice for, prepare for all year and this is one step that we have to take to be able to do that. You have to go out and win the first round game to do that and that’s something our kids are excited about. They’re very goal-oriented and know what is expected of them this week.”
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. today.
