MANCHESTER — Two goals by Trevor Jones and another by Canyon Freels lifted Whitley County to its first 49th District win in seven years on Saturday as the Colonels defeated Oneida Baptist, 3-2.
“My players came to play our game and it showed throughout,” Whitley County coach Jarred Earnest said. “We possessed, moved and set up several goal-scoring opportunities which resulted in successful goals.
“We fought hard to win the ball and keep it despite the speed and aggressiveness of OBI,” he added. “I’m so proud of how none of my players gave up and they fought the entire time. They learned how to play with heart in that game.”
Jones found the back of the net to give his team its first goal of the game before Freels followed with Whitley County’s second goal.
Jones was able to put the finishing touches on the win by adding his third goal of the season.
The win improved the Colonels to 4-4 overall and 1-2 against 49th District opponents. Whitley County is scheduled to be back in action at home today against Middlesboro.
