WILLIAMSBURG — The Corbin 11-12 year old All-Stars cruised to an easy 13-0 win over Clay County to open play in the 11-12 year old All-Star Softball District Tournament on Sunday.
Corbin received a stellar pitching effort from Danni Foley, who allowed only one hit while striking out 12 batters.
Brooklyn Allen and Foley led the way at the plate with three hits apiece while Allen scored three runs and Foley scored twice in the win. Teammate Anela Sanders finished with two hits, both doubles, and one run scored.
“It was a great team win being able to win the first game,” coach Gregg Foley said. “Most of these girls played together in middle school. It’s always good to get the first-game jitters out of the way, and we were able to do that today.
“We had great pitching and great hitting today,” he added. “We allowed one hit and got 12 strike outs. Anela Sanders had two big doubles for us and Brooklyn Allen hit the ball well. She went 3-for-4 and scored three times.”
Corbin built an early 5-0 lead after three innings of play before scoring four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.
Reagan Walker, Morgan Hicks and Izzy Walker each scored twice in the win while Anela Sanders and Kaili Sanders each scored once.
Raegan Walker, Hicks, Izzy Walker and Katie Ridner each finished with a hit apiece.
Corbin is scheduled to be back in action Tuesday, weather permitting, at 8 p.m. against the Tri-City All-Stars.
Foley said he likes his team’s chances of continuing to advance in the District Tournament.
“We have a good chance,” he said. “We have good pitching, good defense, and we are hitting the ball well.”
