South Laurel wasted little time in jumping on rival North Laurel in girls soccer Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals scored in the third minute and again in the twelfth minute to take a quick 2-0 lead en route to a dominating 5-1 win.

Jessica Perkins scored the first two goals of the game for South Laurel. Callie Miller added a goal in the 36th minute to put the Lady Cardinals up 3-0.

North Laurel (5-6-1) standout Kayla Bargo scored just one minute later to cut the deficit to 3-1 just before halftime.

South Laurel (4-6) coach Kenna Williams said her team has played a tough schedule to open the season and now believes it is paying off.

“We have had the hardest schedule,” Williams said. “It is apparent now that it has helped us. The last two games we have played, we have passed really well.

“We have been very successful in overlaps and give-and-goes,” she added. “I am pleased and I think we are headed in the right direction.”

The Lady Cardinals controlled the ball throughout the game. Their defense allowed very few shots on goal by the Lady Jaguars.

“In the first half, we just got beat to the ball,” North Laurel coach Naomi Puskar said. “I guess one of South’s major strengths is their speed and we just didn’t know how to deal with their speed. We were kind of caught flat on our feet and we were stabbing and stuff. Once we got into it things got easier but their speed was definitely the difference in the game.

“Overall the girls gave a lot of effort,” she added. “Even the last ten minutes and we were down four goals you could still see their intensity and drive for the goal. They kept passing and kept that attack on the ball.”

South Laurel continued to put pressure on the Lady Jaguars in the second half. Katie White scored when she kicked the ball off of a North Laurel defender to make the score 4-1 in the 51st minute.

Ginger Johnson ended the scoring for both teams when she netted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to give the Lady Cardinals a 5-1 district win.

South Laurel will play Letcher County Central Friday in the Colonel Classic at Bourbon County. North Laurel returns to action Saturday at Corbin at 3 pm.
