Corbin’s James Grinter scored the game-winning goal in the district title game against South Laurel.

After dropping two games to South Laurel in the regular season, the Corbin soccer team responded with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Cardinals in overtime to claim the 31st District championship during a mudfest at North Laurel.

“They had to adjust to the elements of the weather as much as adjusting to beat the other team,” Corbin coach Armondo Cima said. “We had to shorten up our game some and were not able to go across the field as much.”

Although South Laurel controlled the early part of the first half, the Redhounds took over during the late part with several shots on goal.

The two teams stepped up on defense and went into the locker room tied at 0-0, but the Redhounds came out fired up in the second half and capitalized on a South Laurel penalty. Drew Farley beat the keeper and gave Corbin the 1-0 advantage.

“Farley got held in the box and we got a penalty kick,” Cima said. “It was a good shot and gave us the momentum.”

The Cardinals never gave up and finally found the back of the net as Dustin Herron scored with just over four minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at one apiece.

“It’s tough to give up a goal that late in the game,” Cima said. “I felt like we were controlling the game and they just got some energy late and moved people around. We weathered it pretty well until that shot got through.”

The Redhounds had several opportunities to score in the second half, but Tyler Huff stepped up for the Cardinals.

“Their keeper is really good,” Cima said. “He made some nice saves. We had several opportunities, but he made the plays.”

The Redhounds took advantage of a corner kick during the first ten minutes of overtime as Andrew Sears played the corner and James Grinter scored off a deflection from Huff for the 2-1 victory.

“Andrew played a nice corner and James crashed to the ball,” Cima said. “It came off the keeper’s hands and James found the back of the net. It was good. It gave us a lot of momentum. It’s hard to come back after giving up a goal in overtime.”
