KNOX COUNTY -- A Corbin couple facing abuse charges involving their 10-year-old child have had their trial suspended until Sept. 1, 2021.

Mark A. Golden and Donna Golden appeared together Tuesday in Knox Circuit Court for what was to be their final pretrial conference before their trial on Sept. 10. However, an agreement between the defendants and the Commonwealth's Attorney has been made to suspend the prosecution of this matter until Sept. 1, 2021.

In the agreement the defendant may not break the law during any period of the suspension, and shall comply with all recommendations, conditions, and requirements that Department of Community Based Services may have regarding the child and reunification of the child(ren) with the defendant.

Last month the couple was granted permission to see their children for the first time in over a year, after having their trial date pushed back multiple times.

Mark and Donna Golden have been out on bond since September 2018, but one of the conditions placed on them as part of their release was to not have any contact with the child involved in the alleged incident -- who was 10 years old at the time -- or their siblings. A family court judge ruled in November 2018 to allow Donna Golden supervised visitation at the discretion of the Department of Community Based Services, leading to requests being made on two different occasions in Knox Circuit Court to allow the couple to see their children. Both times Judge Michael Caperton denied to grant either request, instead saying he wanted to first hear from a therapist who had been meeting with the victim and its siblings.

Mark Golden was arrested Aug. 28, 2018, after Kentucky State Police were dispatched to assist social workers during a home visit to the Goldens' residence following a complaint from officials at the child's school regarding marks found on his body. According to police, the child had multiple marks on his face and back, as well as bruises on his arms.

A recorded interview was conducted with Mark Golden, in which police said he admitted to officers as being the person who caused the child's injuries. Mark Golden told police that he disciplined the child with the use of a belt, his hands and sometimes a towel, according to the report of the interview.

There had been multiple incidents that caused the child's injuries, with the most recent occurring two days before social services and police were contacted, according to the report. There were also three other children in the home during the time that the incidents took place. All four children were removed from the home by social services. Mark Golden was placed under arrest and jailed in the Knox County Detention Center.

Mark Golden was indicted in connection to the incident in September 2018, charging him with first-degree criminal abuse. Donna Golden was also indicted on charges of first-degree criminal abuse for knowing about the alleged abuse but not doing anything to stop it.
