CORBIN — Just in time to raise Christmas spirits, the 57th annual Fine Arts Concert Series presents "The Nutcracker" performed by the Lexington Ballet and the Gail Frederick School of Dance.
Although the performance was originally scheduled to be held at the Corbin High School Auditorium it has been relocated to the Corbin Middle School.
"The Nutcracker" tells the story of a little girl who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. Community members will have two chances to watch the classical ballet: 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Close to 50 students from the Gail Frederick School of Dance will be participating in the performance. Gail Frederick said when the Fine Arts Association approached her about joining the event she gladly accepted. She went on to say her dancers were even asked to perform in more than one scene.
“We took full advantage,” Frederick said.
Students of all ages in the Gail Frederick School of Dance will be participating in various scenes. The angel scene will feature younger students from the school and the battle scene is comprised completely of Gail Frederick students.
“We have kids in four different scenes,” Frederick added. “We’re happy and honored that we get to do this.”
Frederick said the children are loving it and have been rehearsing many hours and putting lots of energy into this performance.
“The kids are so excited,” she said. “Lots of our kids have seen 'The Nutcracker, before and some of them haven’t and it’s a new experience.”
Although the tickets do say "The Nutcracker" will be taking place at the Corbin High School, Frederick encourages everyone to spread the word about the location change to the Corbin Middle School Gymnasium.
“We’re thrilled to get to use the new facility,” Frederick added.
Individual tickets for the show can be purchased for $30 at the door. Students can purchase tickets for $10. For more information about the event or the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky Inc. call Trent Knuckles at 606-528-9767.
