Child pornography charges have been levied against a former Union College professor — who has been arrested and remains jailed in Mason County Detention Center in northern Kentucky.

Dr. Charles M. Jones, 59, of Wallingford, was arrested by the Fleming County Sheriff's Office and booked into the detention center Sunday, where he sits under a $25,000 cash bond.

He faces charges of distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, first offense, and possession of material portraying sexual performances by a minor.

Detective Steve Owens with the Barbourville Police Department said Monday that Jones, formerly of Barbourville, was arrested Sunday on charges which began as an investigation in June 2014.

A co-worker of Jones reported finding suspected child pornography images on a common printer — supervisors were then notified, followed by the Barbourville Police.

Owens said his department took those images and worked with staff members at the Union College IT Department, who were able to perform an audit and discover the originating computer.

Warrants were executed and Jones' computer, storage devices and other items were seized, Owens said.

The data storage devices were taken to the Kentucky State Police ECrimes Lab in Frankfort — and analysis there allegedly uncovered hundreds of images suspected to be child pornography.

Assisting in the 2014 investigation were Chief Mike Broughton, Retired-BPD, Patrolman Matt Hammons, Retired-BPD, Patrolman Pat Clouse, Owens and the Union College IT Department and Campus Safety.

It was unknown at press time when Jones will be brought back to Knox County to appear in court for these charges.
