Charles Jones

A former Union College professor who was arrested last month on child pornography charges was indicted Friday by a Knox County grand jury.

Charles M. Jones, 59, of Wallingford, was named in an eight-count indictment for charges that allegedly occurred between June 11, 2014, and June 18, 2014.

A co-worker of Jones reported finding suspected child pornography images on a common printer, according to Barbourville Police Detective Steve Owens. Supervisors were soon notified of the images, followed by the police department.

Owens said his department took those images and worked with staff members at the Union College IT Department, who were able to perform an audit and discover the originating computer.

Warrants were executed and Jones’ computer, storage devices and other items were seized.

The data storage devices were taken to the Kentucky State Police ECrimes Lab in Frankfort, where analysis allegedly uncovered hundreds of images suspected to be child pornography.

Jones was arrested by the Fleming County Sheriff’s Department and jailed in the Mason County Detention Center under a $25,000 cash bond with a 10 percent requirement.

Counts one through four of the indictment charges Jones with possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

Counts five through eight of the indictment charges Jones with distributing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

An indictment is a formal charge by a grand jury; it is not a conviction or an admission of guilt.

Jones has since posted bail.
