Victim of fatal two-car crash identified

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

The name of a London woman killed in a two-car crash Wednesday night has been released by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

Nora Penix, 47, was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph London hospital, according to Sheriff John Root.

Four others, including a 2-year-old toddler, were sent to two different hospitals.

The driver of the second vehicle, Hobert Collier, 68, of London, was sent to Saint Joseph London.

His three passengers, Gene Collier, 70, Sandra Thompson, 45, and a 2-year-old toddler were flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. According to a hospital spokeswoman, Gene Collier and Thompson were not listed in their patient directory.

Their conditions were not known at press time.

The crash happened on U.S. 25 in Laurel County at the intersection with Fariston Road, according to Root.

He said that Lt. Chuck Johnson and Sgt. Richard Dalrymple are reconstructing the crash.

Root explained that deputies said a Ford Focus, driven by Penix, was northbound on the highway when a vehicle stopped suddenly to make the left-turn onto Farison Road.

Penix swerved to the left to avoid a crash, but instead hit a southbound Chevrolet Cobalt head-on, according to Root.

The Chevrolet was driven by Hobert Collier.

Penix was transported to Saint Joseph London with critical injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead from those injuries.

Assisting at the scene was Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and deputies Larry Parrott and Kevin Berry as well as Ambulance Inc. Of Laurel County, London-Laurel Rescue Squad, E.M.S., and the Lily Volunteer Fire Department

Funeral services for Penix will be at noon Saturday at Bowling Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home.
