A Tennessee woman was killed after a single-vehicle crash in southern Whitley County Saturday.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, the woman's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
He explained she was driving a Ford Explorer east on KY-1804 around 1:30 Saturday afternoon near Lot-Mud Creek Road when she apparently hit a ditch and crashed head-on into the bridge abutment.
"We don't know what happened," Harrell said. "There were no skidmarks -- but a witness did say that she was traveling at a high rate of speed when she slammed into the bridge,"
Lt. Millard Root and Deputy Cody Harrell investigated the crash, and were assisted by members of the South Whitley County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and Whitley County EMS. Coroner Andy Croley pronounced her dead at the scene.
