Home destroyed by fire

No one found inside Whitley residence

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

No one was inside a Whitley County residence Tuesday morning when fire ripped through the house — but just who could have been in the house remains a mystery.

Crew members from three fire departments responded to Lee Lane off Bee Creek Road — Oak Grove Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Woodbine Volunteer Fire and Rescue, and Baldrock Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Drivers in the immediate area could see a thick black plume of smoke pouring into the sky around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Oak Grove Fire Chief Kevin Gibbs said the investigation continues into the cause of the blaze. It appeared at the scene that the fire began toward the back of the home and spread upward into the ceiling and roof and forward into the front rooms of the home.

And, although a placard above the door indicated one family resided there, Gibbs said it just was not clear who could have been home.

“Believe it or not, we’re still trying to find the owners,” Gibbs said. “Besides the (name on the placard), there were a few more names inside the house.”

Two disabled vehicles were in the driveway of the house — a white Jeep Cherokee and a four-door SUV. There is also a residence within 500 feet of the burned house, but no one appeared to be home there.

At this time Gibbs said an arson investigator will not be involved — this is simply a “cause and origin” investigation.

Crews spent more than three hours battling the blaze. The residence appears to be a total loss.

Also at the scene were crew members with Whitley County EMS.
