Fire destroys Maple Leaf Lane house

KNOX COUNTY — Strong thunderstorms and dangerous lightning weren’t the only thing that lit up the dark sky during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

At the same time, a structure fire completely destroyed a house on Maple Leaf Lane, next to the Old Barbourville Highway (Ky. 1232). just outside the Corbin city limits.

Around 20 firefighters from two departments fought the blaze, which officials from West Knox Volunteer Fire and Rescue said happened around 1:26 a.m.

The property destroyed in the fire — a one-story frame house with a full basement — was vacant at the time. Officials at the scene said the house wasn’t hooked up to electricity at the time the fire occurred.

By the time firefighters got to the scene, the fire was fully involved.

Crews fought the blaze for hours, and were hampered in their efforts by storms, lightning and sheets of heavy rain that pounded the area during the overnight. Fighting the fire was also complicated by an old metal roof that was on top of the house.

Four pieces of equipment were sent by West Knox to put out the blaze. A crew from Woodbine Volunteer Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

After the fire was put out, crews left the scene around 7:30 a.m.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.

Motorists driving down Ky. 1232 could see smoke from the smoldering ruins during the day Tuesday. As the sun began to set, the ruins rekindled, and a West Knox crew returned to the scene around 8:25 p.m. to knock out a hot spot in the center of the house.

“It’s been smoldering all day. The flames were getting closer to the neighbor’s place. We’ve been here about 10-15 minutes,” said one of the firefighters.

By 8:45 p.m. the the fire that rekindled was declared under control.
