Battle of the Bulge

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — By Jeff Noble / Staff Writer

There’s some new people helping scores of others win the battle of the bulge this summer. But aside from that, this year’s “Just Lose It” weight loss competition will be similar to previous years.

Registration is underway through Friday for the 4th annual event, which is presented by Baptist Health Corbin, Baptist Health Family Fitness, the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the 62nd annual NIBROC Festival in Corbin, and sponsored by the City of Corbin.

The contest starts next Monday and concludes Friday, Aug. 8, when the grand prize winner will be announced.

Those wishing to participate in the competition can register at Baptist Health Family Fitness, located across from Wal-Mart at 440 West Cumberland Gap Parkway (U.S. 25E) in Corbin. The application deadline is 10 p.m. Friday.

The registration fee is $10 for the program only.

Or, those participating can pay a $40 registration fee, which includes membership to Baptist Health Family Fitness through the conclusion of the competition. The cost includes a fitness evaluation with a fitness specialist and an orientation workout with a personal trainer.

While the contest will be pretty much the same as before, “Just Lose It” spokesperson Jamie Bunch said Monday the key idea for those participating is to keep pushing forward.

“’Just Lose It’ will be fairly similar to how the city has done it before. We certainly will strive to make Corbin the healthiest city in Kentucky, but we want people to make changes in their lifestyles, like eating healthier, exercising and especially moving around. Getting up and doing something not only improves your physical activity, it’s a great stress reliever for your mind. And we have several places to do it in town. We have parks, we have the sidewalk renovations in downtown Corbin, and there’s many activities to to outside in our city, like walking, jogging, running or riding a bicycle. We encourage people to use them,” said Bunch, a membership specialist with Baptist Health Family Fitness.

The grand prize winner will win $1,000 in cash and a prize package. Bunch mentioned prize packages will be awarded to the contest’s first through fourth runner-up finishers, with more information on those available as the competition rolls on.

Weigh-in will be held every two weeks. The first weigh-in is Friday. Those participating in “Just Move It” can be weighed in at any time during the day with a Baptist Family Fitness employee.

After this Friday’s weigh-in, the remaining weigh-in dates are Friday, June 20; Thursday, July 3; Thursday, July 17; Thursday, July 31; and the final weigh-in on Friday, Aug. 8 between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Keep in mind that after the July 17 weigh-in, the 20 participants with the highest weight loss percentage will be announced, and will advance as the finalists for the grand prize.

Now, some reminders about the competition:

— It’s only open to participants 18 years of age or older.

— Only weight loss amounts and percentages will be disclosed. Your actual weight will not be disclosed.

— It’s the responsibility of each participant to check with a physician before starting this weight loss competition.

— Those participating will receive a T-shirt after their second weigh-in.

— And, the winner of this year’s “Just Lose It” cannot have had weight loss surgery within the last year.
