Soggy Start

Weather slows state tourney, but show goes on

LEXINGTON — The Corbin Lady Redhounds tennis team ran in to a familiar foe in the state semifinal round, falling to Sacred Heart, 3-0.

The team semifinals Wednesday were an unofficial kickoff to the state tennis tournament, which was scheduled to take place at the University of Kentucky Tennis Complex. Thanks to rainy conditions Thursday morning, the KHSAA was forced to scatter the event over several locations, including UK, the Lexington Tennis Club and Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Local girls players fared well in the opening round as Corbin’s Caroline Reedy (6-3 and 6-3) and Sydney Ledington (6-4 and 6-2) picked up wins. South Laurel’s Neha Rao, a four-time 13th Region Champion, notched a two-set win over McCracken County’s Taylor Sprouse after a second set tiebreaker, while North Laurel’s Pooja Kanthawar came away with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Hazard’s Natalee Morton.

Corbin’s Emma Kate Carloftis and Jaclyn Jewell advanced in doubles play after a no-show in the first round, while the Lady Redhounds’ team of Ellie Jane Carloftis and Makayla Beechum knocked off South Warren’s Krislyn Hudson and Emily Tyler (6-4 and 6-2).

Two of the three Tri-County representatives in boys doubles advanced past the first round. Corbin’s Seth Heinss and William Reedy won, 7-5 and 6-0, while North Laurel’s Dakota Boggs and Sammy Maggard used all three sets to get the win (3-6, 6-1 and 10-4). Corbin’s Seth Evans and Andrew Reedy fell in the first round to Grayson County’s Sam Embry and Brett Majors.

Boys singles results were not available at press time and second round games were delayed due to this mornings rain and moving the event to several different locations. We’ll have a complete wrap-up in Saturday’s edition.
