More than 100 athletes participate in Laurel Lake Triathlon

LAUREL COUNTY — More than 100 athletes converged at the Laurel Lake Dam early Saturday morning to participate in the Laurel Lake Triathlon.

Despite foggy conditions, athletes jumped into the lake at 7:30 a.m. and began a 1.2 miles swim. The swim was followed by 56 miles of biking and 13.1 miles of running.

Athletes had a choice of participating in all three events, just the swim and bike or a team relay.

The first individual to do all three events and cross the finish line was Robert Allison, 47, of Nashville, Tennessee, with a time of 4:58:27. Allison was followed by Bruce Williams, 56, of Loveland, Ohio, with a time of 5:06:23. In third place was the triathlon’s first woman finisher, Shannon Florea, 37, of Lexington, with a time of 5:15:13.

The first team to finish the relay was Team Crump, an all-male team, with a time of 4:55:20.

Lewis Jackson, 31, Philip Wilder, 61, and Liz Elder, 53, were the first, second and third place finishers, respectively, in the triathlon’s swim and bike race.

The final competitor crossed the finish line eight-and-a-half hours after the event’s start.

Andy and Susan Kossen served as directors to the event. The London-Laurel County Tourist Commission sponsored the triathlon along with other local and national businesses.

Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.
