Man collapses during Laurel Lake Triathlon

LAUREL COUNTY — A man participating in the Laurel Lake Triathlon Saturday collapsed and had to be transported to the hospital.

The participant was in transition from the bike to running portion of the triathlon when he suddenly passed out.

Bystanders at the race immediately started CPR on the unresponsive man. Numerous times people were heard yelling, "Don't die on me," as the situation seemingly worsened.

An AED was used on the man and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County later transported him from the scene to Saint Joseph London.

The man's identity was not available but bystanders reported that his breathing was shallow when EMTs took him from the scene.

  • A Well-Deserved Honor

It was a spring night in May 1981 about eight or so miles south of Corbin.
A crowd of folks were there — mothers, fathers, children and more.
Musicians had prepared for a night of music at a concert open to the public.
The venue was the Frontier Village Park, and many people were in attendance.
Deputy Joseph Russell Jones was one of many law enforcement personnel assigned to security detail that day.
