MAN FATALLY SHOT IN CHEST

Result of alleged argument with uncle Wednesday in London

LONDON — An argument Wednesday afternoon led to a man being fatally shot in the chest by his uncle, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Deputies were called to the shooting off Collier Road in London around 3:45 p.m. When deputies arrived at the scene they found Stephen Jack Sturgill, 44, of Tennessee, dead from an apparent gun shot wound to the chest.

Detective Charlie Loomis later found out that Sturgill had allegedly been arguing with his uncle, Gary Collier, 61, of London, when he was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Loomis arrested Collier around 7 p.m. for the murder of his nephew.

Collier was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center. JailTracker records indicate Collier will make an appearance in Laurel County District Court on Monday.

An autopsy will be performed in Frankfort.

Assisting Loomis at the scene were Sheriff John Root, Lieut. Chuck Johnson, Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, Detective James Sizemore and deputies Robbie Grimes, Tyler Morris, Brandon Broughton, Andrew Lawson, Kenton Scharf and Gilbert Acciardo.

Also assisting at the scene were Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County EMS and the Laurel County Coroner’s Office.

Loomis continues the investigation.
