Fire damages home in Lily

3 fire departments respond to blaze

CORBIN — By Kristina Smith / Staff Writer

Three fire departments were called to a non-injury house fire on Happy Hollow Road in Lily on Friday.

Campground Fire Department responded to the home belonging to Delmore Perkins around 1 p.m.

Perkins said he was in the backyard when he heard his tenant, Thomas Stewart, knocking and yelling at the front door of the house.

Stewart, who lives in the basement of the home, said that he was in the basement with his girlfriend when he noticed the house was smoky.  Stewart ran upstairs to the front of the house to check on Perkins’ wife, who is ill.

When Stewart entered the home he said the couch was in flames.  Perkins’ wife, Evelyn, was not home, however.

Perkins said he was unsure about the extent of the damage to his home at the time of the fire.

Both Delmore Perkins and Stewart believe the fire started from a lit cigarette.

Campground Fire Department Chief Chris Turner said the fire is not suspicious, but a cause had not yet been determined.  Turner did say it appears the fire originated in the living room.

No one was injured in the fire, but an EMT was seen giving oxygen to Evelyn Perkins when she returned home and became emotionally distraught.

Assisting with the fire was Lily Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel County Fire Department and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.
