Dumpster Days start next week

WHITLEY COUNTY — Despite the wintry blast earlier this week, the flowers continue to push forth, giving all area residents hope that actual spring weather will soon become more permanent.

And with warmer spring temperatures comes the urge for spring cleaning.

Whitley County residents will get a hand in removal of their unwanted solid waste with the annual Dumpster Days Program, which begins next week.

“Dumpster Days has been a very positive program for our community,” said Amber Owens, Whitley County Projects Director. “I am very pleased that so many people have decided to take advantage of the free disposal provided by the county.”

Owens, who also oversees cleanup of the illegal dump sites scattered throughout the county, said this program has helped that situation.

“Since this program began, we have seen a dramatic decrease in the number of illegal dumps around Whitley County,” Owens said. “I think that decrease is directly related to the availability of our Dumpster Days Program.”

Five dump sites were approved for grant funding earlier this year, and the contracts to clean those sites have been awarded. The old Corbin Hospital dump site is already cleaned.

“Judge/Executive Pat White Jr. created the Dumpster Days Program in the hope that it would curb the amount of illegal dumping in Whitley County,” Owens said. “And I believe it has done just that.”

The first dates for the April Dumpster Days Program are April 4-6.

That dumpster will be set up at the Emlyn Volunteer Fire Department.

The next dates for a dumpster set-up are April 11-13. On those dates dumpsters will be set up at two locations — in Woodbine at the old Benge’s Market, and on KY 1804 at Jones’ Grocery.

On April 18-20, a dumpster will be set up at C & P Quality Meats in Williamsburg.

On April 25-27, the county will set up a dumpster at Elswick Trucking on Hwy. 92W in the Jellico Creek area.

A crew will be present from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on these days to assist residents with unloading. Tires will not be accepted.

The annual Dumpster Days Program coincides with April being designated as PRIDE month.

April is PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month in southern and eastern Kentucky.
