Black ice blamed for fatal interstate wreck

LAUREL COUNTY — A fatal crash occurred Monday morning on I-75 when a car collided with a tractor-trailer, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Slavko Frkovic, of Ontario, Canada, was heading south on I-75 when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle on a patch of black ice. Frkovic’s vehicle then spun out of control into the path of a southbound tractor-trailer, Root said. The vehicles collided, causing serious injury to Frkovic and his two passengers – Svetlana Frkovic in the rear passenger seat and Sanja Frkovic in the front passenger seat, both of Ontario, Canada.

Charles Briwn, of Frenchburg, was driving the tractor-trailer. He and passenger Anthony Thomas, of Salt Lick, were uninjured, according to Root.

Slavko, Svetlana, and Sanja Frkovic were sent to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Root said. According to Root, Svetlana Frkovic died of her injuries following transport to the Lexington hospital.

According to Shea Willis with the Fayette County Coroner’s office, the cause of Svetlana Frkovic’s death was multiple blunt force trauma. Her death was ruled as an accident.

According to a hospital official, Slavko Frkovic remains in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

At the scene were deputies Tyler Morris and Mikey Ashurst, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement Officer Rob Mitchell, Kentucky State Police Trooper Jason  McCowan, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County Fire Department, London-Laurel Rescue Squad, and London City Police.
