Charles F. Fritts Jr. was sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove Wednesday afternoon.

In a rearraignment on Oct. 12, 2011, Fritts had pled guilty to two counts of the eight counts he was charged with in an indictment filed April 7, 2011.

The two counts to which he pled were distributing a quantity of pills containing oxycodone and possessing a Chinese-made 12-gauge shotgun.

The other counts were conspiring to sell oxycodone pills, distributing hydrocodone pills and four counts of distributing oxycodone pills.

In a criminal complaint issued on March 5, 2011, Todd E. Tremaine, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), reported that on Jan. 30, 2011, a confidential informant (CI) had gone to the home of Jason Kersey, and asked him if he had a pain pill.

Kersey had no pills and took the CI to the home of C. Fritts.

The CI said that former Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge was at the home.

Soon, the CI said, Hodge gave C. Fritts a bottle of pills and C. Fritts told Hodge that he would get rid of them in a couple of hours.

In imposing the sentence, Van Tatenhove also ordered that C. Fritts be given drug education and treatment, GED education and supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence.

Earlier, C. Fritts’ brother Doyle Fritts was found guilty on Feb. 28, of four counts in the indictment charging him with conspiring with C. Fritts, two counts of distributing pills and handling a Chinese-made 12-gauge shotgun, reportedly coming from the office of Hodge.

Sentencing has not been scheduled.

The third Fritts brother, Jerry Lee Fritts, was also tried with Doyle Fritts and acquitted in the two counts in the indictment charging him with conspiring with his brother and distributing oxycodone pills along with his brother Doyle Fritts.
