Richard Jones and Lady Wildcats came oh, so close

CORBIN — By Les Dixon

A lot of things have happened during the past week, so with that said, I’m not going to waste any of your time and get right to my rambling.

Revisiting the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Girls Tournament

Richard Jones’ Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats were oh, so close of capturing their first-ever 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic championship this past week, but fell a few points short of reaching their goal.

Now many will and have argued that Pineville’s last-second three-point attempt to tie and send the game into overtime shouldn’t have counted — what are my thoughts on that? Well, I’m not going to get too deep into it, but when the buzzar sounded, I was adding up game totals.

It would have been a good story seeing Jones and his group of Lady Wildcats capture the title. They pulled off the big upset over Barbourville to begin the tournament and had to survive a scare against Middlesboro to reach the finals.

But make no mistake about it, Pineville has a very good team. I really like the Lady Mountain Lions’ never-quit attitude — they could have easily folded numerous times during the game, but kept plugging away.

Congrats goes out to Pineville coach Matt Schafer and his players for advancing to the All ‘A’ Classic State Tournament.

What a win

Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons has to be happy with the way her team is playing now. She continued to show why she’s one of the best coaches in the state by leading her Lady Redhounds past defending 13th Region champion Clay County Monday, 57-56.

If you like nailbiting action, Monday’s game had it. Holli Disney led Corbin with 16 points, but it was a key assist by Disney with seconds remaining in the game that sealed the win for the Lady Redhounds. Disney found a wide-open Miranda Wilson and Wilson put the ball in the basket to give her team its first win in 16 tries against Clay County.

Red Bird’s Erik Young

I haven’t seen Red Bird’s Erik Young play yet, but he’s leading the 13th Region in scoring with a 30.3 scoring average while scoring 40-plus points in four games this season. Is it me or does Red Bird coach John D. Wilson always have a solid scorer on his team?

Sweet 16 Draw Show

The Draw Show for the 2013 KHSAA Boys and Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament will take place Friday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. CWKYT will provide a live broadcast of the pairings along with a live feed available online at www.khsaa.tv.

13th Region’s unbeatens

Only three teams remain unbeaten against 13th Region opponents this season and they are the Harlan County Black Bears (8-0), the Harlan County Lady Black Bears (9-0) and the Whitley County Lady Colonels (5-0).

This could turn out to be a special year for the Harlan County boys and girls basketball programs. They both are searching for their first 13th Region titles and have a chance to accomplish the feat on their homecourt this season, if they can avoid opening round upsets in the 52nd district tournament.

13th Region Tournament boys     elimination games

We’re still a while away before the district tournaments in the 13th Region tip-off, but it’s never too early to take a look at upcoming match-ups in the district tournaments. This we know — Pineville and Knox Central will meet in the 51st District semifinals, which means one of those teams will not be moving on to the 13th Region Tournament. A potential elimination matchup in the 49th District Tournament between North Laurel and Jackson County will more than likely take place unless North Laurel can win out in district play and then get a Jackson County win over Clay County, which would turn into a three-way tie for the No. 1 seed and to be honest, I don’t know what the tiebreaker is.

I took advantage of my boss’ offer to stay in Corbin and man the fort as opposed to another trip to Harlan County Friday night. But don’t think I’m just sitting around with the day off. There’s always something to do here in the world of Tri-County sports and Friday was no exception.

With my second day of 13th Region action out of the way (I didn’t travel Monday), I’ve decided that the road that takes you to Harlan, the Kingdom Come Parkway, was aptly named.

Now we are down to only four teams remaining in the 13th Region Boys Tournament, so I decided it’s time to cut down our list of frontrunners for this year’s Times-Tribune Tri-County Player of the Year.

While interviewing long-time Whitley County Lady Colonels head coach Larry Anderson for a game preview of his showdown with Clay County, Larry and I had an interesting conversation about several things.

To some people in Southestern Kentucky, postseason high school basketball, more particularly the 13th Region Tournament, is way more exciting than Christmas morning and with good reason I suppose.

If you’re a high school basketball fan this has got to be the greatest time of the year for you. It’s not quite March yet, but I’m sure everyone has March Madness.

Before I begin rambling a bit, I’m sure you are wondering where the heck are the stories and pictures from Friday’s boys and girls basketball action?

Clay County’s Marty Bowling might be one of the most underrated players in the 13th Region at the present time, but if he continues to put up numbers like he has been, he won’t be for long — Bowling is the real deal.
