It’s time to dust off my crystal ball

CORBIN — It’s that time of the year folks — yep, it’s time for me to give my Fear ‘Les’ Forecast for the upcoming NFL season.

Believe it or not, things kick-off Thursday with defending champion Green Bay facing off against former champion New Orleans.

Two years ago, I was right on target for my Super Bowl pick (Green Bay), but this past year, I wasn’t as lucky, as Green Bay failed to repeat — but hey, you’re not always going to get’em right, right?

So with that said, it’s time for some fearless picking.

AFC East champion — Once again, I’m going with the New England Patriots to win the AFC East and I’m going out on a limb and picking the Buffalo Bills to snag one of the Wild Card spots.

AFC North champion — This is a hard one. Of course I love my beloved Cincinnati Bengals, but I’m really concerned about Marvin Lewis’ squad. Baltimore should flex its muscles and capture the division crown again while Pittsburgh’s aging offense and defense will keep the Steelers out of the playoffs.

AFC South champion — Houston has a solid offense and a terrific defense and look for the Texans to win the division while Tennessee will grab the other Wild Card spot.

AFC West champion — Everyone is riding the Peyton Manning and Denver Broncos’ bandwagon, except for me. This is the year the San Diego Chargers actually reach their potential and go 12-4.

AFC champion — My guT says New England, but my head says Houston, so with that said, the Texans will advance to their first Super Bowl — too bad it’s not the Houston Oilers.

NFC East champion — I’m not going to waste much time here on the NFC East, but I’m picking Dallas to win the division and Philadelphia to capture one of the Wild Card spots.

NFC North champion — The NFC North is the best division in football and Green Bay, Chicago and Detroit will battle things out for the division crown. In the end, I’m going with Green Bay while Chicago will get the Wild Card.

NFC South champion — I’m hoping the Atlanta Falcons can win the division and I’m picking them to because I just don’t really like the New Orleans Saints’ defensive play. Carolina could be a sleeper, too.

NFC West champion — I’m picking the San Francisco 49ers for the second straight season, but watch out for Seattle.

NFC champion — Another tough one here, but look for Green Bay and Chicago to battle things out in the NFC title game and Da Bears finding a way to win.

Super Bowl champion — Houston — you’ll have a problem with the Chicago offensive attack, but find a way to win your first Super Bowl. OK folks, I know I’m going out on a limb, but crazier things have happened.

I took advantage of my boss’ offer to stay in Corbin and man the fort as opposed to another trip to Harlan County Friday night. But don’t think I’m just sitting around with the day off. There’s always something to do here in the world of Tri-County sports and Friday was no exception.

With my second day of 13th Region action out of the way (I didn’t travel Monday), I’ve decided that the road that takes you to Harlan, the Kingdom Come Parkway, was aptly named.

Now we are down to only four teams remaining in the 13th Region Boys Tournament, so I decided it’s time to cut down our list of frontrunners for this year’s Times-Tribune Tri-County Player of the Year.

While interviewing long-time Whitley County Lady Colonels head coach Larry Anderson for a game preview of his showdown with Clay County, Larry and I had an interesting conversation about several things.

To some people in Southestern Kentucky, postseason high school basketball, more particularly the 13th Region Tournament, is way more exciting than Christmas morning and with good reason I suppose.

If you’re a high school basketball fan this has got to be the greatest time of the year for you. It’s not quite March yet, but I’m sure everyone has March Madness.

Before I begin rambling a bit, I’m sure you are wondering where the heck are the stories and pictures from Friday’s boys and girls basketball action?

A lot of things have happened during the past week, so with that said, I’m not going to waste any of your time and get right to my rambling.

Clay County’s Marty Bowling might be one of the most underrated players in the 13th Region at the present time, but if he continues to put up numbers like he has been, he won’t be for long — Bowling is the real deal.
