It’s time to dust off the ole crystal ball

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — It’s that time of the year folks — yep, it’s time for post-season play in boys and girls soccer along with volleyball, too.

We also have some interesting games on the slate Friday with our high school football teams, too. Yep, this should be an interesting week for the Tri-County sports fan, and don’t worry, I’m gonna pull out the ole crystal ball, blow off the dust, and make some predictions.

13th Region Boys Soccer Tournament

Mark Acampa has done a fantastic job with his North Laurel Jaguar soccer team. After starting the season with a 6-4 record, the Jaguars have reeled off seven straight wins, including a 3-1 win over rival South Laurel in the 49th District Tournament and a 2-0 victory over Corbin in the 49th District title game.

North Laurel has outscored its opponents 23-7 during the win streak and its main competition in the 13th Region Tournament should be the Corbin Redhounds.

The Redhounds defeated the Jaguars earlier in the season, 5-4 in a shootout, but like I said above, North Laurel returned the favor.

If a third meeting happens, it should be an interesting one. Corbin is struggling right now after jumping out to a 6-1-1 start — the Redhounds’ record since? Try a 5-6 mark, including going 1-3 during their last four games while being outscored 14-4.

So who is going to win the 13th Region championship? At the beginning of the season, I would have said Corbin, but right now, I have to stick with the hot team and go with the Jaguars.

13th Region Girls Soccer Tournament

Many thought the South Laurel Cardinals were in trouble after they started the season with an 0-3 mark. But look who those losses came against — Dunbar, Boyle County and Henry Clay, who have a combined record of 31-19-7.

Lady Cardinal coach Todd White enters each season with a plan and that is to play a hard schedule and learn from the tough games by post-season play — South Laurel has done just that. By doing that, the Lady Cardinals enter the 13th Region Tournament as the team to beat, and rightfully so, after posting a perfect 7-0 record against regional foes.

South Laurel is 10-2 during its past 12 games and has defeated Corbin twice this season while outscoring the Lady Redhounds 8-1 during the process. Look for the two teams to meet again in the 13th Region title game and I expect the Lady Cardinals to pull through against a solid Corbin squad to win the region championship.

13th Region Volleyball Tournament

This should be an interesting tournament, but in the end Corbin, Whitley County or South Laurel will be crowned 13th Region Tournament champions.

David Halcomb’s Lady Colonels shook things up during their final game of regular season play by handing the Lady Redhounds their first regional loss of the season. Add South Laurel’s sudden improvement and you’re gonna have a great first round match-up Tuesday between the Lady Colonels and Lady Cardinals.

But in the end, it’s the defending 13th Region champion's tournament to lose.

So with that said, I’m sticking with Corbin, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see either Whitley County or South Laurel winning the crown either.

Big game on the gridiron

No game this week compares to the showdown between Russell County and Knox Central. The winner will capture the district championship and if it turns out to be the Panthers, it will be their first-ever.

Both teams will enter Friday’s games with identical 8-0 records and it should be a treat to watch. So who am I picking to win? You’re gonna have to check out the Fear "LES" Forecast in Friday’s edition of the Times-Tribune.
