I’m trying to make sense of what Green Bay is doing

Tapping Out

Maybe the Green Bay Packers know more than I do about the situation they are tangled in with future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre — the very quarterback that has been the face of the Packers’ organization for more than a decade.

The guy decided after last season, which was one of the best of his storied career, that he was ready to hang up the cleats and retire. Now, he feels like he may have prematurely came to that decision and still has the desire to compete and prepare for another season of leading the Packers towards a possible Super Bowl.

The Packers, however, want Favre to stay retired and allow unproven Aaron Rodgers to take over as the team’s full time signal caller. This is where things begin to get fuzzy in my simple mind.

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy flew to Mississippi to meet with Favre and his agent James “Bus” Cook. Reports from sources say Murphy offered Favre 20 million dollars over 10 years to stay retired.

In my opinion, the Packers are willing to pay 20 million dollars to ensure the team is not as good as it was a year ago. That is jaw-dropping news to me. I don’t think Favre is wanting to play again for the money. I believe the man wants to continue to do what he has done every day and every season since childhood and that is play football.

The Packers don’t want to grant Favre a release in fear that he may go somewhere to a rival team and play. If it is worth 20 million dollars to have him not play, then why not just release him and let some other team deal with him? I would love to know the real reason behind the Packers’ stance on this situation.

How is the franchise going to handle the disgruntled fans if the Packers have a losing season this year under the leadership of Rodgers? That would be the absolute worst case scenerio for everyone involved — especially Rodgers.

Hopefully, Green Bay comes to a quick decision and allows Favre to play football somewhere, if not for the Packers.

Let’s jump track here and talk about baseball. It is pretty much common knowledge that I am a Cubs fan and, by the way, the Cubbies are rolling right now. Anyway, I am a Cubs fan, but my favorite player is Ken Griffey Jr.

The Reds have been looking to trade him all season and it looks the White Sox are going to get the outfielder. I know the Reds need to get rid of Griffey’s salary considering that he really isn’t producing numbers to match his pay.

Griffey is a fan-favorite, however, and don’t be surprised to see a drop in attendance. I don’t know what the Reds got in return, but I know it still won’t be enough to fix all that is wrong with the team at this point.

Speaking of trades, how does the Yankees get Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez for Kyle Farnsworth? The rich get richer and well you know the old cliche.

One more time before I go... I know Les Dixon will join in... Root root root for the Cubbies. If they don’t win it’s a shame.
