Little League can be bitter sweet

Wow, the last couple of weeks have been hectic. I have seen more Little League games than I could have ever imagined. I have enjoyed every game and to be honest, I have had bad moments in each and every game.

Let me explain...

There is nothing better than seeing a 9-year-old boy or girl ecstatic with joy after winning a game and advancing or even winning the championship. I could just imagine the happiness I might someday see on my boys’ or my little girls face in that same situation

On the flip side of that joy is a team full of 9 or 10-year-olds whose heart’s where just broken. You have to see the pain in their face and the tears in their eyes. Then, I start to imagine my little ones in that situation and it is tough to even think about.

I grew up a sports lover and obviously, I am still quite the fanatic. The one sad and harsh truth is that there can only be one winner and to have that winner, there must be a losing team or person.

While we are on the subject of Little League, let me applaud and say congratulations to all the Tri-County teams who have played so well. All the teams from Laurel County (North and South teams), all the teams from Corbin, Knox County and Williamsburg. They have all been very impressive in baseball and softball. Now I understand why there seems to always be a Tri-County team in contention for region and state championships. It starts in Little League.

• Football

I have never really been a fan of Brett Favre but, I do think the Packers are making a huge mistake by not welcoming him back as the starting quarterback. Do they not remember all the magical things he did one year ago, leading them to the playoffs and one of the best records in football?

Favre is a great player and obviously, he is still better than any other signal caller on the Packers’ roster. He is not only a fan favorite in Green Bay, but a fan favorite in just about every town in the country. It makes sense to bring him back in the best interest of the team’s chances of winning and it more than makes sense to bring him back to draw fans to the stadium.

• Basketball

In case you didn’t know, there is a new professional basketball team in Kentucky. Bowling Green will be home to the Kentucky Mavericks in the upcoming ABA season. Team owner Jason Smith is working hard to make the Mavericks a contender soon and keep pro basketball alive in the best basketball state of all.
