Fear 'Les' 13th Region Diamond Ratings

Girls Top 5

1. North Laurel Lady Jaguars (26-6)

What’s the scoop: What else is there to say?

Shane Weaver’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars continue to dominate.

Case in point — the Lady Jaguars are winners of 16 straight and have outscored their opponents 102-10 during the process. That’s against top notch teams folks.

I’m talking about some of the top teams in the state.

I know this sounds repetitive, but the gap between North Laurel and the rest of the teams in the 13th Region looks rather large.

Surprise, surprise: Weaver is one coach in the state that doesn’t back down from a challenge. After seeing his team’s game against No. 3 ranked Ryle last week, he rescheduled the road game for Friday just a day before his team participates in ‘The thrill in the ‘Ville’.

2. Middlesboro Lady Yellow Jackets (19-5)

What’s the scoop: Middlesboro knocked off Corbin by one run on the road Tuesday, but I’m not sure just how much better the Lady Yellow Jackets are than Corbin.

Surprise, surprise: As long as Brooklynn Jimison turns in a solid effort, Middlesboro will be a threat in the post-season.

The best of the rest ...

3. Corbin Lady Redhounds (15-14)

What’s the scoop: Corbin didn’t have such a good week, but I’ve got a feeling the Lady Redhounds could surprise a few teams once post-season play begins.

4. South Laurel Lady Cardinals (25-7)

What’s the scoop: I’m not too sure just what to think of the Lady Cardinals. South Laurel has the talent to win the region title, but who knows which team will show up.

The loss to West Jessamine last week has me scratching my head.

5. Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets (18-10)

What’s the scoop: Andrea Ellis’ squad is playing pretty solid softball right now. Williamsburg has won five games in a row and will be a threat in post-season play.

Boys Top 5

1. Clay County Tigers (22-6)

What’s the scoop: For the first time in a long while, we have a team that was able to remain at the No. 1 spot for two consecutive weeks.

Congrats goes out to the Clay County Tigers.

Surprise, surprise: To be honest, it’s a toss-up on who is really the best team in the region. Any team in the top five can win the title, along with a couple of teams that aren’t in the top five. The Tigers are 12-3 against 13th Region opponents.

2. Corbin Redhounds (19-11)

What’s the scoop: The Redhounds are the hottest team in the region after capturing their fifth win in a row Tuesday against Knox Central.

Surprise, surprise: Corbin is now healthier than ever and that could pose problems for opposing teams. Jeff Garmon is receiving solid hitting and pitching at the present time. The Redhounds are 10-5 against 13th Region foes.

The best of the rest ...

3. Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (16-7)

What’s the scoop: The Yellow Jackets are red-hot right now. They’ve won five games in a row, while outscoring their opponents 51-3 during the process. Williamsburg is 12-5 against 13th Region foes.

4. Bell County (20-12)

What’s the scoop: Rob Ledington’s squad drops a couple of notches, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have enough talent to win the region. With Spencer Greer and Kyle Nelson at the top of their pitching rotation, don’t be surprised to see the Bobcats make a run for the region crown. Bell County is 11-5 against 13th Region teams.

5. (tie) North Laurel Jaguars (16-13)

What’s the scoop: The Jaguars are a very solid team. North Laurel is 12-6 against 13th Region opposition.

5. (tie) South Laurel Cardinals (19-12)

What’s the scoop: South Laurel hung tough with Lexington Christian before losing 4-2, so the Cardinals have the talent to make a run.
