Anything can happen

Tapping Out

I have to start this one out with an update on my favorite basketball team — the Boston Celtics. The Celtics put a scare in me last week by letting the eight-seeded Atlanta Hawks force them into game seven. Les Dixon would give me frequent updates throughout the Hawks’ victories over Boston. I knew everything was good to go Sunday when he failed to call. When Les beats you at something or even when his team beats your team you can bet your bottom dollar that the trash talk is on the way. I am just glad the Cetlics took care of business and are moving on to the second round of the NBAPlayoffs. Bring on Cleveland and King James. I think the Celtics have already played the three worst games of the season (in Atlanta)and have learned from them and moved on.

I don’t know how many people were at Knox Central High School last Saturday to see the UKBarn Storming tour, but Iwas there. Les and I were supposed to play against the former UKplayers, but Ihad to sit out do to illness.

Les played, however, and Ithink he held his own. He was matched up with Joe Crawford and Imust say that the former UKstandout failed to score while Dixon was in the game.

The UKBarn Storming team had Woo Orbzut, Bobby Perry, Ramel Bradley and Crawford on the team along with others from the Knox County area. The UKteam won the game 79-72. Knox Central players Jacob Scalf, Tony Mills, Derek Vanover and Corey Williamson all had good showings in the game as well.

OK, enough about the games that don’t really matter. Let’s turn our attention to the 50th District baseball tournament. This might be the most competitive four-team district Ihave ever witnessed.

South Laurel has won the 50th District every year they have been a part of it according to Corbin coach Jeff Garmon. Iwould say that would make them the team to beat.

The Cardinals did lose ace pitcher Trey Smith to graduation last season, but first year coach Wynn Harris has them playing as good as any team in the district.

Corbin is a traditional powerhouse and the Redhounds have proven over the course of the season that they can compete with and beat any team that steps on the field with them. If the Redhounds pitching continues to improve Ican see Garmon’s team moving on to the 13th Region Tournament.

Whitley County and Williamsburg both started the season strong, but have hit bumps in the road as of late. John Smith’s Colonels and Don Stricklin’s Yellow Jackets will both be a tough game in post-season play.
