The Way It Is

Are you ready for round four? For the second consecutive season, the Corbin Redhounds and South Laurel Cardinals will be playing each other to see who will play at Rupp Arena next week. Many expected the Redhounds to get back to the regional title game, but South Laurel making a third straight trip is a little bit of a surprise. Today’s 13th Region final appearance marks the the sixth consecutive year the Cardinals have played in a regional final. What’s South Laurel’s record during the stretch? Try 4-1. The lone loss came to the Wayne County Cardinals in 2004. • Isaac Wilson on the run ... Man, oh man, Corbin’s Isaac Wilson played in overdrive against Knox Central. When he got a rebound, he saw a hole in the Panthers’ defense and he went to work. What an outstanding individual and what an outstanding game! Wilson completed 8-of-12 shot attempts in the win and led his team in rebounds (eight) and assists (three). Remember, he’s only 5-foot-9. • What a second half It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that not many teams are going to lose when they shoot 70 percent (21-of-30) from the floor during the game’s final 16 minutes. That’s exactly what Corbin did against Knox Central. The Redhounds shot lights out! You have to give head coach Tony Pietrowski and assistant coaches Jason McDaniel and Brent West a lot of credit for keeping their team focused after seeing Corbin fall behind 40-30 at halftime. • Keep your heads up The Lynn Camp Wildcats’ season might be over, but what a fantastic season the orange and black put together this season. Lynn Camp recorded 19 wins, advanced to the 13th Region Tournament for only the fifth time in school history and captured the school’s first-ever regional tournament win. There’s no reason to hang your head guys. • Title game prediction I’ll make this short ... South Laurel captured two wins over Corbin this season, but I believe a third win will be hard to get. The Cardinals will hang around for three quarters before the Redhounds’ high-powered offesive attack begins to take over. I’m taking Corbin by 11.
