WHITLEY COUNTY — Friday’s 50th District matchup between the Corbin Lady Redhounds and Whitley County Lady Colonels was not for the weak of heart.
It took two overtimes to decide the winner, but when all was said and done, the Lady Redhounds came away with a 65-62 win, locking up the top seed in the upcoming 50th District Tournament.
Corbin connected on four-of-nine free throw attempts in the second overtime, the final two by Miranda Wilson, giving her team a three-point lead with 5.6 seconds to play. A final heave by Brandy Smith from near half court was off the mark as time ran out on the Lady Colonels.
After the win, Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons said she got exactly what she expected from Friday’s contest, which she said was a typical Corbin vs. Whitley County affair.
“I wouldn’t have expected anything different coming down here than a game like this one tonight,” Parsons said. “It’s such a rivalry and this is a great atmosphere for high school basketball and the fans really get into it.
“I thought it was a great effort given by both teams, especially with the injuries his team has suffered lately,” she added. “It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t good, but we fought until the end and were able to come away with the win to lock up that top seed.”
Whitley County had its chance to seal the win with no time left on the clock in regulation after a foul was called against the Lady Redhounds, sending Maria Johnson to the free throw line for the Lady Colonels.
Johnson missed both free throws, sending the game into the first overtime all tied up at 51 apiece.
After Kayla Wilson connected on the first shot of the period, neither team was able to muster any offense in the second overtime. The Lady Colonels made three-of-four free throws, while Corbin’s Kristen Fothergill made one-of-two attempts.
Corbin had a chance to end things with the final possession, but a turnover as time ran out also kept the Lady Colonels from getting a shot off as well.
The two teams traded baskets in the second overtime until Corbin took a 63-59 lead on four straight points by Kayla Wilson.
Whitley County trimmed the gap to 63-62 on a clutch three-pointer from Sierra Feltner with 9.5 seconds to play, forcing them to put the Lady Redhounds at the free throw line again.
Miranda Wilson, who led all scorers with 20 points, pushed the lead to 65-62 with 5.6 seconds to play and Smith’s shot went just long to end the game.
Smith led the way for the Lady Colonels with 17 points.
Corbin improves to 18-7 on the season and 6-1 in district play, while the Lady Colonels fall to 14-6 and 3-2 in the 50th District.
