WILLIAMSBURG — The Clay County Tigers won their sixth straight game over 13th Region opponents with an 80-52 win over the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets on Thursday.

The Tigers used a balanced attack to defeat the Jackets with six players scoring nine or more points in the contest. Senior Marty Bowling led Clay County with 14 points, while Jarrod Rice and Stephon Lyttle added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Williamsburg Coach Patrick Robinson was impressed by the high-scoring Clay County squad.

“Clay County had a very solid team. They’re quick, athletic, and hard to stop,” said Robinson. “I will be very surprised if they don’t make a deep run this year.”

The Tigers wasted no time taking control of the game, jumping out to a 23-6 lead after the first quarter. They took a 37-22 lead into the half.

Clay County extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Jackets 24-11 in the period, holding a 61-33 advantage, heading into the final quarter. The teams played even in the final quarter, with the Tigers going on to win 80-52.

Despite the loss, Robinson liked the way his team competed in the matchup.

“Our kids never laid down,” said Robinson. “I was proud of the effort they gave tonight.”

Sophomore guard Corey Shelton led the Jackets with 17 points. Sophomore point guard Skyler Griffith added 12 points.

The Jackets will host Whitley County on Monday, while the Tigers take on Lexington Catholic tonight.
