PERRY CENTRAL — Just a month ago North Laurel and Harlan County played each other with the Black Bears pulling off a 72-46 win over the defending 13th Region champions.
The two teams met again Saturday in the WYMT Mountain Classic Fifth Place game and the final result was a whole lot closer.
The game was tied at 35 apiece minutes into the final quarter of play before Harlan County (16-3) took charge down the stretch to pull off a 51-43 win.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 10-9 overall, as they posted a 1-2 mark in the WYMT Mountain Classic.
“We played really good through three quarters and made some costly errors in the fourth that cost us the game,” North Laurel’s Brad Sizemore said. “But I'm pleased with our effort tonight and in the other two games. We are starting to get back on track and hope to continue it on Tuesday against Corbin.”
North Laurel led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but a pair of three-pointers by Harlan County’s Alex Sergent allowed his team to take a 24-23 edge at halftime.
The Jaguars outscored Harlan County 10-9 during the third quarter to tie the game at 33 apiece heading into the fourth quarter.
Chad Massingill led the Black Bears with 16 points while Aaron Caldwell and Tyler Miller each followed with 10 points apiece. Jake Allen scored 11 points for North Laurel and teammate Peyton Broughton finished with a 10-point effort.
