Big win

Lady Tigers beat South Laurel for first time

LONDON — The Barbourville Lady Tigers have impressed many this season and they didn’t stop that trend Sunday afternoon, knocking off the South Laurel Lady Cardinals for the first time in the program’s history with a 58-54 overtime win.

Kara Erslan led the Lady Tigers with 23 points in the win, while Emily Clonce paced South Laurel with 16 in the loss.

After the game, Barbourville coach Andrea Hillard said it was one of the biggest wins in the school’s history and said she hoped it provides her team the confidence to compete with the top teams in the 13th Region.

“It was one of those games where the girls never stopped fighting,” Hillard said. “We took a tough loss last night and they just came in and decided they weren’t going to lose.”

Hillard said that stubborn streak is something she has seen in her kids since the start of the season and that she thinks it’s a trend that will continue.

“These kids have taken so many beatings over the years that I think they are just ready to be on the winning side of them,” Hillard added. “I really think they are ready to compete with teams other than the small 1A schools on a regular basis and wins like this prove it.

“South Laurel is a great program and has a really good team this year,” she added. “They are always near the top of the region and to be able to get our first win ever over them is right at the top as far as big wins for this program.”

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
