WHITLEY COUNTY — Maria Johnson hit five three-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the Whitley County Lady Colonels past McCreary Central Friday, 61-49.

The Lady Colonels are still without the services of center Kandice Craig due to an injury, but coach Larry Anderson has had different players step up during Whitley County’s first two games of the season.

“I was really concerned not having Kandice, but things have went well so far,” he said. “We’ve had different players step up and one of my concerns entering the season was our depth and we have been playing a lot of girls and this will just make us better.”

Whitley County (2-0) managed to take a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, as Hallie Jones caught the hot hand by scoring eight points while knocking down two three-pointers.

The Lady Colonels still managed to hold a three-point lead at halftime (28-25) with Johnson leading the way with five points during the quarter.

McCreary Central continued to stay close with the Lady Colonels, as Anderson’s squad was holding on to a slim 42-37 edge with eight minutes remaining in the game and that’s when Johnson caught fire.

She scored nine points in the fourth quarter while hitting three three-pointers.

Brandi Smith and Taylor Dingess each scored four points apiece in the quarter, which allowed Whitley County to outscore the Lady Raiders 19-12 during the final period of play.

“This was a good win for us,” Anderson said. “We’ve got a tough schedule in front of us, but that will just make us better by the end of the season.”

Whitley County will be back in action on the road Tuesday against South Laurel.
