Corbin White wins elimination game against So. London

CORBIN —

By John Stepp For The Times Tribune

LONDON — The Corbin Minor League All Stars used a four-run seventh inning to defeat South London in the finals of the loser’s bracket of the Area 2 tournament, clinching a spot in the District 4 tournament next week.

Corbin had no trouble hitting the ball in the contest, scoring in all but one of the seven innings, while collecting 11 hits and capitalizing on several South London errors.

“The kids played good all day long. We’ve hit the ball well all tournament long and that’s what helped us win the game today,” Corbin coach Jody Botner said. “These kids, they’ve really come together during this tournament. They weren’t together early on, but they’ve gelled.”

Corbin controlled the game from the opening at bat as Quinton Botner and Cody Cox each had singles and scored runs in the inning to give Corbin a 2-0 lead after one. Corbin added runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead, midway through the game.

South London rallied in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 4-3. A single by Chance Wyatt brought two runs home, followed by a single by Kennedy Sizemore to add another run.

“It’s been a long two or three weeks. They’ve practiced two long weeks out here, every day, and they’ve done well,” South Laurel coach Ryan Sizemore said. “We told them that there is no offseason and we want to them to keep working hard and when league play starts back to help their teammates so we can get back here next year.”

Both teams added runs leading to Corbin holding on to a 7-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Just three outs from elimination, South London rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. A double from South London’s Wyatt brought home two runs, and a Corbin throwing error allowed Eli Sizemore to score and send the game into extra innings.

Corbin wasted no time bouncing back in the seventh, as four of their first five batters reached base, adding four runs to gain a 11-7 lead. Jacob Baker, Colby Cornett, and Will Brock all added singles and scored, followed by another run by Corbin’s Kaylee Morales.

South London failed to score in the bottom of the inning, sealing the victory for Corbin and eliminating South London from the tournament.

“We always have one bad inning each game. If we bounce back from that inning we can win, and we did that today,” Botner said. “I was proud with the way we fought back. Being able to go on to the next tournament, that’s just awesome.”

Corbin will take on Hazard No. 2 in the opening round of the losers’ bracket of the Area 2 tournament next week at South London.

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.
