The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will face a familiar foe when they play Pineville today in an SEKC scrimmage at Middlesboro. The two teams play every year and will meet up with each other later this season in a regular-season match-up.
But for now, look for both Jerry Herron’s squad and Bart Elam’s squad to test each other without showing much on either offense or defense.
“Coach Elam is one of the most underrated coaches around and he does a fantastic job each year with his team,” Herron said. “I like going against them in a scrimmage because he will show us so many different sets on offense and it will really test us. Honestly, there is no telling what they will do.”
For Herron, he said his starters will see some action, but the biggest thing he wants to see is how his younger guys will perform in a game-type situation.
“That’s the biggest thing — I want to get these young guys in and let them see some live-action football. We don’t know how they’ll perform in a game-type situation, so this will allow us to see that,” he said. “Our starters will see some reps and get some work in and then we’ll start mixing things up and put some other players in.
“There are some things we will want to work on and of course, some things we don’t want to show,” Herron added. “We want to come out of this seeing our older kids clicking and I’m sure there’ll be some things that we will see that we need to work on as well.”
