LONDON — It took South Laurel just nine minutes to tally its first goal in a 12-0 rout of Whitley County Monday in the opening game of the girls’ 49th District soccer tournament at North Laurel.

“I thought it took us a little while to do what we wanted to do,” South Laurel coach Todd White said. “Once we got to playing the ball wide and then back across the front of the goal, good things happened.”

It was Haley House that got South Laurel (12-4-2) on the board first off an assist from Karli Parker in the ninth minute. One minute later, it was Parker scoring the first of her four goals after making a nice run from midfield down the left side, cutting back and beating keeper Katelyn Rose to make it 2-0.

A minute later, it was Kristen White’s turn, off an assist by Meredith McCowan. Another minute later, another White goal, this time off an assist from Parker, to make it four goals in four minutes and up the lead to 4-0. White also finished with four goals.

“Our focus tonight was for Karli not to score as much but to look to assist,” White said.

The goals continued to come for South Laurel.

A White cornerkick in the 15th minute led to a Holly Smith goal. Then in the 23rd minute, White was able to get her foot on a loose ball in front of the goal to make it 6-0. White would also score in the 25th minute, seconds after Parker blasted a shot from 18 yards out to beat Rose.

In the 31st minute, it was Parker again, this time on a shot from around 30 yards out, to make it 9-0. Another Parker goal came in the 33rd minute, followed by goals from Ariel Rudd and Regan Rutledge to make the final 12-0.

“I wanted us to play high-pressure defense, and we did that,” White said. “We didn’t allow Whitley to set up their offense. We overmatched them skill-wise. But I’m proud of the way we played and the way we passed the ball.”

South Laurel now advances to Wednesday night’s championship game against the winner of Tuesday night’s Corbin-North Laurel game.
