Who has the best chance of hosting a playoff game?

CORBIN — If you’re a high school football fan, this is the time of the year you love.

District games have started, and teams are trying to position themselves for a home playoff game or two.

With that said, I’m going to take an inside look to see just which team has a shot of playing a home playoff game.

Corbin — It basically will come down to next week’s road game at Bell County. The Redhounds will enter the game as the favorite to win, but picking up a win on Log Mountain isn’t an easy task. The last time Corbin played there, the Redhounds dropped a 42-14 decision in 2011. Actually Corbin has been outscored 83-27 during its last two games in Bell County, and the Redhounds' last win on Log Mountain came in 2003 when they defeated the Bobcats, 24-14.

With that said, whoever wins next week’s game, will host a home playoff game.

Who will it be?

I say Corbin.

Knox Central — If the Panthers beat Rockcastle County next week at home, they are guaranteed a home playoff game. Plus a win over the Rockets would basically set up a district title showdown in three weeks at Russell County.

Will Knox Central get a home playoff game?

Yep.

Lynn Camp — It’s been a long time since Lynn Camp has hosted a home playoff game (2007 against Campbellsville), but this could be the season when a home playoff game returns to Lynn Camp. The Wildcats will need to get a win over Berea Friday, and another against Campbellsville the following week to do so. If they can do that, then their game against Williamsburg would be for the district crown.

Will Lynn Camp be playing a home football game?

I believe so.

North Laurel — The Jaguars haven’t hosted a home playoff game since 1994. That’s a long time folks, and their loss to Pulaski County puts them in must-win mode for a home playoff game. They must get past Lincoln County, Madison Southern and South Laurel to do so.

The key game will be against the Eagles on the road Oct. 18. If the Jaguars win that game, they’ll get a home playoff game.

Will they?

It’s going to be tough beating Damien Harris and Madison Southern on the road, so I’m giving the Eagles the edge.

South Laurel — The Cardinals haven’t hosted a home playoff game since the 2005 season when former coach Jep Irwin guided the Cardinals to a 40-28 win over Lafayette. South Laurel is currently 0-2 against district opponents, and I don’t look for the Cardinals to host a home playoff game this season.

Whitley County — The Colonels might be 0-6, but I like their chances of hosting a home playoff game for the first time since 2009. To do so, they must beat both Perry Central and Letcher Central, and I believe Whitley County will.

Williamsburg — This is an easy one. The Yellow Jackets have hosted a first round home playoff game for seven straight years and they’ll make it eight this season. The last time Williamsburg didn’t host a first round playoff game came back in the 2006 season when the Yellow Jackets traveled to Harlan and lost 42-35.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
