Shutout win

Corbin blanks Pulaski County in home opener

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

CORBIN — The Corbin Lady Redhounds snapped a three-match losing streak Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Pulaski County at home.

The win was a group effort as Matty Thompson, Morgan Boggs and Kaitlyn Waddle combined for the Lady Redhounds’ three goals in the win.

The victory, as well as a few players returning from injury, may have come just in time for Corbin head coach Eric Steely as his team gets set to face South Laurel Thursday in a district showdown.

“This was a good win for us and it was also good to finally get to play at home,” Steely said. “This is a good momentum win and it also is a win where we were able to get several girls back on the field that have been injured.

“Hopefully we can build on this and improve as the season progresses,” he added. “We’re still a young team and we have a lot to work on, but I’m happy with the way we played tonight.”

Corbin took the lead 10 minutes into the contest when Thompson’s goal made the score 1-0, which is where it stayed until the second half.

Boggs scored in the 55th minute to stretch the lead to 2-0, while Waddle’s goal in the 75th minute extended Corbin’s margin to 3-0.

As if the group effort in the scoring column wasn’t enough to make Steely happy, he was especially pleased with the effort of Corbin’s keeper, Meghann Blackburn, after the shutout.

“Meghann did a great job for us, but really when you look at it, she’s done a great job all season so far,” Steely said. “The problem has been that we haven’t played all that well in front of her yet.

“She made an absolutely beautiful save that sent the ball over the crossbar got everybody going,” he added. “Everyone played well tonight, which is why we won the match, so you have to be pleased as a coach.”

Corbin will be back in action Thursday when it hosts South Laurel at 5:30 p.m.
