SOUTH LAUREL — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals had 12th Region power Boyle County on the ropes, but couldn’t put them away as the Lady Rebels rallied to knock off James Burns’ squad, 8-3.
The Lady Cardinals led 2-0 going into the fourth inning, but five errors led to six unearned runs, as South Laurel dropped its first game of the season, falling to 6-1.
“We made too many mistakes,” Burns said. “We made the mistakes I thought we were going to make back earlier in the year — we made them today.
“We made five errors,” he added. “Whether it was throwing the ball to the wrong base or not covering a base. If we do those things, we win 3-2.”
Even though his team trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Cardinals had a chance to regain the lead. South Laurel had runners on first and third with no out, thanks to two consecutive errors by Boyle County, but the Lady Cardinals only pushed one run across to tie the game at three apiece.
And that’s when the Lady Rebels took control of the game, thanks to two Lady Cardinals miscues in the top of the seventh inning that led to four runs, and a Boyle County win.
“Now we know what we need to work on,” Burns said. “They really bunted the ball well tonight and they have a lot of speed. They’ve got 20 players and they used about all of them tonight. They are a good team.”
