KNOX CENTRAL — South Laurel senior pitcher Hagan Burns put to rest any thoughts of her being injured after tossing a perfect game while striking out 14 of the 15 batters during the Lady Cardinals’ 13-0 win over 13th Region foe Knox Central.
Just how dominant was Burns?
She struck out the first 11 batters she faced, and improved to 19-3 on the season while recording her 10th shutout during the process.
“I think tonight showed Hagan doesn't have any shoulder problems,” South Laurel coach James Burns said. “She pitched awesome. She had a perfect game and had every strikeout but one tonight. She pitched well.
“We’re finally coming around,” he added. “We’re getting it. The key is if we’ll make the plays when we have to make the play. And we’ve got to start getting the hits with two outs.”
South Laurel finished the game with only eight hits, but did manage to draw eight bases on balls during the 13-run victory.
“We weren’t patient,” Burns said. “We were swinging at whatever they threw or we tried to take them, and hit it in a hole.”
Haley Shelby led the way with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Brittany Vandeventer delivered a three-run single and collected two walks. Destiney Salva had two hits and two runs scored and Madyson Morris drew two walks and scored twice while Makenzie Powenski ran her hit streak to nine games with a single.
Nell Murray had a hit, two walks and two runs scored while Leslie Dixon had a hit, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Kaylee Norvell finished the game with a hit and a run scored.
The Lady Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, and seven runs in the third inning before wrapping up the win with two more runs in the fifth inning.
South Laurel will be back in action at Lafayette today with games against Taylor County, Grant County and Lafayette.
“I’m happy, but we’ll see tomorrow what happens,” Burns said. “We’ll see a bit of a different pitcher.”

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.

Even though Knox Central head football coach Scottie Russell has seen the departure of two of the program’s best tailbacks due to graduation in the past two years, he isn’t concerned.
Shelton was a hero by any definition
The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
