South Laurel rebounds in fine fashion

NORTH LAUREL — Coming off one of their worst losses of the season, the South Laurel Cardinals knew they needed to take care of business against Madison Central Thursday.

And they did just that.

The Lady Cardinals (20-6) fell behind 2-1 in the fifth inning before rallying to score two runs in the top of the fifth, which was good enough to give them a 3-2 win over the Lady Indians.

“It was a good win for us,” South Laurel coach James Burns said. “We played good defense and we hit well, but we just couldn't score. We left nine base runners. Our Achilles heel is hitting with two outs. We've just struggled when we have two outs.

“This was a big win tonight,” he added. “We're short-handed again tonight. We were without Amber (Hyde), but we were still able to get the win against a very good team. We came back after the loss and had a good practice and played well tonight.”

Hagan Burns turned in a stellar effort on the mound, limiting the Lady Indians to two runs and five hits while striking out six batters.

“Hagan pitched great tonight,” Burns said. “She hit her spots and did really good.”

Burns also led the team with two hits, a run scored, two doubles and one RBI while Brittany Vandventer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. Nell Murray collected two hits in the win, which included a double while Bailey Miller and Megan Smith each drove in a run."
