Whitley splits with North Laurel

NORTH LAUREL — North Laurel managed to pick up a 9-0 win on the hardcourts in girls tennis action against Whitley County, but the things didn’t turn out as well on the boys’ side of things.

The Colonels were able to squeak out a slim 5-4 win over the Jaguars, who are now 13-3 on the season.

“Whitley is in a rebuilding year, and we were able to win comfortably,” North Laurel coach Bob Smith said of his team’s 11th win of the season. “Pooja (Kanthawar) and Caroline (Moore) won again and have positioned themselves for a high seed at regionals if they continue to take care of business the rest of the week.

“Whitley County has a very good team and they'll definitely be a contender for the team title at regionals this weekend,” he added. “They handled us pretty good at the top of the lineup. (Danny) Butcher is clearly the top player in the region and should definitely get a high seed at state. He belongs in the discussion of best players ever from our region. We were able to stay in the match with the bottom of our lineup picking up three courts.  We gave ourselves a chance going into doubles. Unfortunately, Arjun (Kanthawar) and Spencer (Bolton) turned in a clunker for us. The few chances we had were squandered away, and we just never got ourselves in the match.”
