WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Lady Colonels kept their impressive season going Monday, winning their 28th match of the season in a 3-0 (25-6, 25-15 and 25-7) win over Barbourville.

The win means the Lady Colonels will face Knox Central in the 51st District finals tonight after the Lady Panthers got past Lynn Camp in straight sets as well (25-18, 25-16 and 25-13).

After the win, Whitley County head coach David Halcomb said he was pleased with his team’s effort after he challenged them to come out and play well without thinking about the quality of their opponent.

“We wanted our kids to focus on playing well and just getting into the next round,” Halcomb said. “We set some mini-goals for our kids and made sure to emphasize things like good serves because Barbourville can’t have any outcome on the quality of our serves.

“We did a good job of playing our style and doing the things that we do well as a team,” he added.

Whitley County picked up the 25-6 win to take a 1-0 lead and never looked back.

Barbourville put up a bit of a fight in the second set before falling to the Lady Colonels, 25-15. Whitley County cruised in the third and final set, 25-7.

Knox Central 3, Lynn Camp 0

The Knox Central Lady Panthers punched their ticket to the 13th Region Tournament when they knocked off Lynn Camp for the third straight time this season in a 3-0 victory.

Lynn Camp head coach Cody Dixon admitted that it was sad to see the careers of six Lady Wildcat seniors end after the loss.

“It was a sad night for our six seniors,” Dixon said. “We ended the season on a bad note by not reaching one of our goals of advancing to the region tournament, but we can’t let the loss take away from the season that we had this year.

“I’m proud of all our girls and how far they’ve come since they started playing,” he added.
