On a Roll

Whitley County improves to 3-0 with win over Knox Central

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

WHITLEY COUNTY — Monday’s 51st District volleyball match-up between Whitley County and Knox Central was a tale of two entirely different teams.

One team seemed to fold under the pressure, while the other flourished after withstanding an early struggle.

The Lady Colonels came away with the 3-0 win (25-15, 25-20 and 25-13) to remain unbeaten on the season (3-0, 2-0 in 51st District play) after weathering an early Knox Central stand in the first set.

After trading points for much of the first set, Whitley County rallied for nine straight points to grab the 25-15 win.

“I thought we played pretty well and we cleaned up some things from the first two matches,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “One of the concerns for us is our mental toughness, so the fact they withstood that early struggle is a big plus for them.”

Knox Central coach Barb Gregory said her team seemed to do just the opposite of the Lady Colonels when the chips were down.

“We lost a few players and when that happened it was like their heart just sank,” she said. “It was a mental block for our girls and really, the scores showed that there is no reason that we can't hang with these teams that we are facing.”

The second game was more of the same for Whitley County as they traded points with each other early on, pulled away to lead 23-17 and held on for the 25-20 win.

Knox Central was never able to get in the third set as the Lady Colonels’ Kelsey Osborne tallied six straight points on serve to put her team on top for good.

Whitley County stretched the lead to 13-5 before the Lady Panthers called a timeout and tried to regroup, but Halcomb’s squad never slowed down.

The Lady Colonels pushed the lead to 20-8 before closing the match out with a 25-13 win.

Halcomb said that even though it's early in the season,

he felt like there was plenty of positives to be taken away from the match.

“I thought our passing was great and the back row play of Kelsey Bolton and our libero play by Alexa Chaffman was really good,” he said. “When we get a good pass to our setter and our setter gets a good pass to Briana (Maynes), we’re pretty hard to stop.”

Both teams will be back in action today as Whitley County travels to Somerset and Knox Central hosts Harlan County.
