Redhounds move on to district finals after 3-0 win over Whitley County

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

CORBIN — Corbin’s Kevin Goins has come to be known as Mr. Reliable on the pitcher’s mound this season and Monday wasn’t any different for the junior hurler.

Goins went all seven innings for the Redhounds, giving up four hits and two walks, while striking out five to get past Whitley County in a 3-0 battle. The win advances Corbin to the 50th District Championship game today against South Laurel.

“I can’t say enough about Kevin and the way he has pitched for us this season and he came out and did it again in this game,” Corbin coach Rob Ledington said. “This was a good win for our team and a lot of the credit goes to our coaching staff. Trey Smith, Sam Jackson and Cody Philpot are three guys that do not get the credit they deserve for getting these kids prepared on a daily basis.”

While Goins was the go-to-guy on the mound, a pair of Redhounds carried the bulk of the load on offense.

Jacob Metzger came through with a two-out, two-strike single in the second inning that scored a pair of runs, putting the Redhounds on top 2-0.

All was quiet until the fifth inning when Nick Vorbeck tripled to right field and scored on a error by the right fielder, pushing the lead to 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Whitley County threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Austin Ysidro and Corey Crisologo reached base with one out in the inning. Goins came through in the clutch when he got Tilmon Jackson to ground into a double play as Corey Ledington and Andrew Jones teamed up to get the Redhounds out of danger.

The Colonels put runners on first and second again in the seventh inning, but Goins worked his way out of trouble again.

After getting Jordan Crusenberry to fly out to center, Goins struck out Michael Harris to end the threat and the game.

With his team guaranteed a spot in the 13th Region Tournament, Ledington said even though he expects his team to be relaxed for the title game, he was adamant about the fact they want to win a district championship.

“We want a district championship and I expect our kids to come out and fight for it,” Ledington said. “I think they’ll be relaxed, but I also expect them to come out and play their tails off.

“You want to win every game you play, but you want to win this next one so you can draw one of the losers in the region tournament,” he added. “We’ll have a senior on the mound in Chad Brown and my staff will have our kids ready to go.”
