Lady Colonels drop 12-9 decision at home to Clay County

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Lady Colonels found themselves in a slugfest for most of the night against Clay County Thursday.

The bad news is that after trading punches for six innings, Amanda Moses’ team was unable to answer the bell as they eventually fell, 12-9.

Clay County got the scoring started early by putting up three runs in the top of the first, but the Lady Colonels answered with a four-run rally to grab the 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Tigers tied things up with a run in the top of the third to make the score 4-4 and then took a 7-4 lead with three more in the top of the fourth inning.

Once again though, Whitley County used a four-run inning to not only get back in the game, but also grab an 8-7 lead heading into the top of the fifth.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth inning, giving the Lady Colonels a 9-8 lead.

The bad news is that’s where the offense stalled for the Lady Colonels.

Clay County scored three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to close the game, earning the 12-9 win.

Despite the loss, Moses said she likes what she’s seen out of her squad this late in the season. She said she’s confident that her team will be ready to play come Monday night’s district tournament game against Corbin.

“I like what we’re doing right now and what’s important is that they’re having fun,” Moses said.
