BEREA — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals came into Monday’s game against Madison Southern looking to avenge a 9-5 loss to the Lady Eagles last week.
Mission accomplished as James Burns and company scored a pair of runs late in the game to come away with a 2-1 win.
Hagan Burns gave up just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out seven batters en route to the win.
After the win, James Burns said he was pleased with the way his Lady Cardinals played, especially after losing to the same team last week.
“We really wanted to come in here and get them back for that loss last week,” he said. “It was senior night for them also, so that made it a little better to be able to beat them on their field.
“We played a good game, but we had an error that cost us a run,” he added. “Overall, I’m happy with the win and the way the girls played.”
Offensively, Chelsey Wemes came up big as she connected for her second home run of the season to put the Lady Cardinals on top 1-0.
South Laurel extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning when Brittany Vandeventer reached base, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on an RBI single by Bailey Miller.
