LOG MOUNTAIN — The North Laurel Jaguars suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Bell County Monday, managing just four hits through seven innings.
Bell County scored a run in the first inning and according to Jaguars coach Darren McWhorter, it was the only mistake pitcher Austin Thompson made the entire game.
“This was a good baseball game all-around, but we came out on the losing end,” McWhorter said. “Austin (Thompson) missed with one pitch there in the first inning and it allowed them to get a guy in scoring position and eventually come around to score.
“Other than the run in the first, our guys were lights out on the defensive side,” he added.
While the defense played well, offensively it was another story as the Jaguars had chances to score, but left 11 runners in scoring position by game’s end.
Even though North Laurel was without the services of Weston Griebel and Marcus Carson, McWhorter wasn’t about to make excuses for his team.
“Marcus was at senior awards and Weston had a middle school thing to attend, so we were without those guys,” he said. “That’s not really an excuse though because you have to have the guys that are in the game come through if they expect to win.”
